If you're in Kano, watch what you wear, they're arresting people now!

According to a report by AFP, police who enforce Islamic law in Kano have arrested 150 people in the last week, including for indecent dress, as part of a crackdown on immorality.

From AFP
Some people in Nigeria’s second city have been picked up for sporting hair styles inspired by prominent international football players, said Mohammed Yusuf Yola, spokesman for Kano’s sharia police, or Hisbah. Others were thrown in jail and fined for wearing their trousers too low on their waists, mimicking a style that became prominent in the 1990s, partly through the influence of some American hip hop artists. The arrests have followed an order by Kano state Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to cleanse the city of immoral practices and the trend is set to continue in the weeks ahead, said Hisbah Director-General Abba Sufi. The Hisbah is a state police force funded by state govt and is not part of the federal police.“We have arrested 150 men and women in the past week, including prostitutes and their boyfriends, transvestites, alcoholics and those engaged in indecent dressing in contravention of the sharia legal code,” Yola told AFP.

Religion has repeatedly been used as a political issue in Kano and the governor, seen as a moderate, has been accused by rivals of lacking commitment to sharia’s guidelines.Yola insisted the operation was launched to reverse disturbing trends in the city of some five million people and is targeting people of various faiths.“Those arrested include Muslims and non-Muslims and we treat them equally because this is about morality,” he said.

Kano, like the rest of northern Nigeria, is majority Muslim, but the city has a sizeable Christian minority.

Some of those arrested have been released after paying fines ranging from 10,000 naira ($63, 46 euros) to 15,000 naira, Yola said.
“Those who could not afford the fine are being kept in prison,” he added, but he would not specify the number of people currently being held.
At the restoration of civilian rule in 1999, 12 northern states, including Kano, formally adopted sharia, but the Islamic legal system has been unevenly applied.

The Hisbah was formed in 2001, largely to enforce sharia, but the force has other duties, including some community development work and alternative dispute resolution.

The southern half of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is mostly Christian

How to Tell if Your Boyfriend/Girlfriend Is Cheating

  1. Pay attention to changes in their normal routine. Is he, for instance, coming home from work later than usual on some nights? Sometimes these small changes to a person's routine mean nothing more than life has given them a reason to be unavailable, but they are still something that you want to be aware of.
  2. Does he/she allow you to touch, or look through their phone, emails, etc.? If your boyfriend or girlfriend is hiding their phone from you, or deleting all their messages before letting you have it, then there is something they don't want you to see.
  3. Notice if they leave the room to take calls. If you ask whom called or texted them, do they always tell you "It's nobody?" These are also important signals, which like number 2, show that your fiancée, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc. has something to hide.
  4. Have they become moody suddenly, and eager to start fights? Sometimes, a cheating lover will displace his or her shame, anger, and guilt onto you by starting a fight, which can then be blamed on you. In short, they need a place to throw off their negative feelings.
  5. Has your boyfriend or girlfriend stopped talking to you? Did your significant other always have things to say, and has suddenly become distant? Your relationship may be losing intimacy because your lover has started a new one with someone else.
  6. Notice if a boyfriend or girlfriend is constantly putting someone else down. They may be saying awful things about that person, but pay attention to the fact that they are still talking about them 24/7. They are trying to fool you into believing the person is undesirable, thus throwing the suspicion off them.
  7. Pay attention to changing interests, including music, political views, social issues, favorite books, or movies, etc. When someone spends enough time with someone else, they begin to adopt their views, or at least understand them. If your boyfriend or girlfriend is interested in things that they hated before, perhaps they are being influenced by someone else more than usual.
  8. Have his or her friends begun to act oddly around you? When you casually talk to his friends, do they seem anxious, nervous, or eager to leave? They probably know something you don't know.
  9. Does he smell different when he comes near you? Everyone knows this one is cliché, but it is also true. If he's coming around smelling like a perfume that you don't wear, then he's been too close with someone who wears it.
  10. Does he or she become angry when you come over unannounced, or only text you when they are at home, never calling you? These are also signs of a between-the-sheets betrayal. For some reason, they do not want you at their home at certain times, and they do not want to call you while they are at home.
  11. Catch them in a lie. Casually ask a boyfriend or girlfriend where they were such and such day, and let them answer. Remember their answer, and ask again a few days later. If they are lying constantly, then they will have a hard time keeping up. They may start to get angry with these simple questions, another big hint.
  12. Watch for unexplained bills, receipts for meals, etc. bought for two people. If you keep finding receipts from McDonalds with two different meals on it, or two sodas in the cup holders, or a bill for a bracelet you did not get, then watch out.
  13. Pay attention to whether he has to "clean up" before letting you into his house, room, or car. If an earring is lying in the passenger side of his car, or a condom is behind their bed, extra time will probably be taken to dispose of those items.
  14. Do they have other email accounts, or other online accounts? Or begin to, out of nowhere, change their passwords to keep you out of their accounts? Normally, if they didn't give you their password to start with, this is no problem. But if they've suddenly changed it to protect messages they've written, or chats they've had, you should be aware.
  15. And lastly, notice whether he begins to buy you gifts out of nowhere, or she starts casually mentioning an end to your relationship. Questions such as, "What would you do if we broke up," are key hints. Men and women, both, become guilty. This guilt can easily be forgotten with an action or item for the other person that makes the cheater seem selfless.

Woman escapes unhurt after giant container crushes her car(Photos)

This is Amazing....A Chinese woman left many speechless when she miraculously emerged unhurt after her car was crushed by a giant container.
The woman was reportedly driving in Zhangjiagang in the Jiangsu Province of China alongside a lorry carrying the huge, orange box, which suddenly tilted to one side crushing her car.
Firefighters were called to the scene but had to wait almost twenty minutes for a crane powerful enough to life the container off of the car.Rescuers and members of the crowd which had gathered were then astounded to hear a voice from inside the car shouting for help.
They were able to cut the car open with tools and pull the woman, who had sustained no serious injuries, to safety.

8 Ways to Stay Young as You Age

What does it mean to be "psychologically young"? It's not about wrinkle creams, plastic surgery, or injections to make you look younger. It's about having a positive mental attitude, staying cognitively and physically active, and having a high-quality life.

How long you live and the quality of your life are, to a great extent, under your control. Apart from all the studies that show how lifestyle choices such as exercise and diet play a role in longevity, there's also a good body of research that links positive attitude with the number of years people live. For example, one study involving 100,000 women found that women who were optimists were 30 percent less likely to die of heart disease than pessimists. Another study found that optimists were less likely to become frail. Frailty was defined as impaired strength or endurance, balance problems, as well as vulnerability to trauma and other stresses.

Want to live longer and stay younger as you age? Here are eight ways to stay psychologically young, add years to your life, and boost the quality of those years.

Develop a positive mental attitude.
How you feel about getting older can actually affect how long you live. This gets tested more as you age because of an emphasis on youthfulness in our culture. You must have goals and look forward to the future, irrespective of your actual age. Will you look forward to the future when you are 75 or 85 as much as you did when you were 25? If the answer is "yes," your positive attitude will help keep you going.

Don't act your age.
You are only as old as you feel. The key to psychological health is how you feel inside, not your chronological age or your physical appearance. Feeling old is a self-fulfilling prophecy. For example, if a person genuinely feels too old to do a physical activity, such as hiking a mountain, she is apt to cut back on the activity. Once she does, her muscles will start to shrink from lack of use, and her bones may get smaller, and she may cut back her activities even more. Avoid this rut by continually doing things like exercise as you age. You are as young as you feel.

Resist mobility aids until you need them.
Don't use a scooter or a motorized wheelchair unless you really need to. It's too easy to become dependent on such mobility aids because they are easier than doing the work our bodies need and crave. If walking tires you out, walk slowly and walk often to build up your strength and endurance. The more often you exercise and use your muscles, the less tired you'll feel. As activities become more difficult, resist the urge to give up. Instead, maintain or improve your existing fitness level by continuing to remain active or gradually ramp up to where you want to be.

Continue working in retirement.
Many studies have shown a correlation between early retirement and earlier death. A recent one showed that for every extra year of early retirement, workers lost about two months of life expectancy. Many people can't wait to retire, because their jobs are stressful and they don't take enough vacations. But having a job gives you something to look forward to. You learn new things through work and develop social networks, important activities to have throughout life. Work, actual or volunteer, is in part what keeps people living to advanced ages. If your full-time career is too taxing, consider working part-time, switching to a less stressful job, or volunteering.

When you have health problems, keep your chin up.
Even if you have a disease or illness that's impacting your life, having a positive attitude will keep you healthier and could extend your life. One team of researchers analyzed 35 studies of populations with existing health conditions. The people who had optimistic outlooks during the duration of the studies had significantly less risk of dying than those with pessimistic attitudes.

See aging as an opportunity.
Self-perception of aging has a greater impact on survival than blood pressure and cholesterol levels. That's what one recent study found when the researchers measured the functional health of participants aged 50 or older over the course of 18 years. The ones who lived longest demonstrated a positive outlook about their future and their ability to function effectively. Those who believed aging was no big deal were able to climb stairs, do housework, work full-time, go out socially, and do other activities associated with younger people. And they lived 7.5 years longer than those with less positive ideas about aging.

Ignore negative stereotypes about aging.
A study out of North Carolina State University found that negative stereotypes have a negative effect on memory performance. People were exposed to negative words associated with aging, such as "cranky," "senile," or "feeble," or positive aging words such as "active," "accomplished," and "knowledgeable." Adults 57-82 performed more poorly on memory tests when they were exposed to the negative stereotypes before taking the tests. In contrast, when these same adults were exposed to the positive stereotypes, they performed significantly better and as well as people in their teens and 20s.

Have goals for the future.
Draw up lists of things to do. This is important regardless of your age, particularly for those who are retired. While work itself can keep you younger, there is more to life than just work. Look forward to life in general. You must have personal goals and aspirations, as well as professional ones. These can be career goals, personal interest goals (e.g., take up a new sport, start a new hobby, read Shakespeare's plays), physical goals, cognitive goals (e.g., learning a language, taking up crossword puzzles), or nutritional goals. Goals help you grow and develop at any age.

A heavy across three states left seven people dead in , Oyo State capital and , Edo State, while paralysing business activities in the states.
The rain, which started in the evening of Sunday and continued for most part of Monday, resulted in traffic snarls in all the affected cities and towns, leaving many commuters stranded.
In Ibadan, although the Oyo State police command confirmed only two people dead in Orita Challenge area of the city, residents of some communities in Oluyole Local Government Area of the state claimed five other people were swept away while attempting to cross a bridge, which they did not know had collapsed.
One of the victims, said to be an unidentified elderly man, was said to have disembarked from a commercial motorcycle and had attempted to cross the flooded bridge at LAD Hospital area at about 8.00 a.m on Monday.
He reportedly died when he slipped and hit his head on the slab of the bridge.
The second incident, which occurred at about 11.30 a.m, involved a commercial motorcyclist who also attempted to cross the flooded bridge, as the water swept him and his female passenger off.
Though the passenger was rescued, the okada rider was not fortunate, as he and his motorcycle were swept away.
His body was, however, found around 2.30 p.m about 200 metres away from the spot where he was swept off by the flood.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the remains of the two victims had been deposited at the State Hospital mortuary at Ring Road, while the female passenger was taken to a private hospital for treatment.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, who confirmed the story, said he had instructed his men to cordon off the place so as to prevent further disaster.
It was gathered that the policemen, led by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Orita Challenge division, Daniel Alao, were still securing the bridge as of the time of filing this report.
In Benin, the Edo State capital, the rain, that started at about 7.00 a.m, left no fewer than 15 houses submerged at Azinge Crescent, Ihama Road, GRA, while, at least, three houses were nearly submerged at Slaughter Street in Aduwawa.
At Aiguobasinmwin, the Customary Court of Appeal and the secretariat of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) were affected, while some houses and vehicles were submerged in the area.
It was the same story at Oza Street, off Sokponba Road in the Edo State capital, as many vehicles were trapped and damaged inside the flood at Ihama, Adesuwa and adjoining streets of Sapele Road.
Businesses were paralysed in notable commercial areas such as Ring Road, Forestry, Third Junction and New Benin, as retail outlets and stores were locked as a result of the high intensity of the rain.
Other affected areas were Ugbioyokho, GRA, Ikpoba Hill, College Road, Ekenwan Road, Textile Mills and Aduwawa.
Residents also stayed indoors, as many roads were impassable, while people in flooded houses were seen trying to rescue their belongings from the flood.
A woman, Cordelia Igbe, said her belongings and that of her neighbours, including their houses, were submerged in the flood.
“I was in the office when I received a phone call from my neighbour to come home quickly, as flood had entered my apartment.
“I had to take excuse from my boss and rushed home. What I saw was not what I bargained for at all. I am really confused, I don’t know what to do,” she lamented.
As of the time of filing this report, the rain had not stopped and the effect could not be fully quantified.
When contacted on Monday afternoon, the state Commissioner for Environment, Clem Agba, said he was in the state executive council meeting and could not say anything because he had not been properly briefed on the situation.
In Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the rain, which spanned over 20 hours, disrupted socio-economic activities in the state capital, causing gridlock in some areas.
Though there was no recorded casualty, the rain prevented pupils of private schools, who had already resumed for the new academic session, from going to school.
Similarly, some civil servants found it difficult to resume at their duty posts in time, owing to the incessant rain, as commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as okada could not operate.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the prolonged rain would have wreaked havoc if not for the dredging of streams and other water channels within the city by the state government.

China building new airport terminals in Lagos, P-Harcourt

Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, CCECC, has started at the Lagos and Port Harcourt international airports, southern Nigeria, aviation authorities said on Tuesday.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, said the new terminal in Port Harcourt is being constructed in addition to the on-going remodelling of the old terminal at the .
FAAN spokesperson, Yakubu Dati, said CCECC contractors have moved to the site with some equipment and have begun preliminary engineering works.
“The project is expected to be completed in one year according to the project engineer, Mr. Lee,” Dati said.
The same Chinese company also began work on the project at the Murtala Muhammed international airport on Monday on a piece of land still in dispute.
The Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi had last week accused the ministry of aviation of neglecting Port Harcourt airport because of the rift between him and President Goodluck Jonathan.
But Dati said work is nearing completion at the old terminal which is used for both domestic and international flight operations.
He said contractors have redoubled their effort to meet the earlier deadline given them by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria for completion.
“Work on the international wing of the remodelling project has reached 90% completion while the domestic wing is about 60% completed,” Dati said.
He said when completed, the seating capacity of the remodelled terminal will be increased from 700 to 1500 while the toilet facilities will increase from 30 to 44.
“The Authority regrets the inconvenience airline passengers and operators still face at the Port Harcourt International Airport as a result of the on-going remodelling project at the airport and promises that this will soon give way to seamless operational services, for which all Nigeria would truly be proud,” Dati said.

ASUU STRIKE: Students Insist On Planned Protest Despite Police Presence

Despite the heavy presence of security men at the premises of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) following the students’ plan to protest the lingering industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Tuesday, the students have insisted that they will proceed with their demonstration regardless of the development.

ASUU has been on strike since June 1, 2013 following the inability of the Nigerian Government to honor the agreement it signed with the union in 2009.

The UNILAG students are also agitating for the reinstatement of their Student Union Government (SUG) as well as the reversal on the hike in tuition at the Lagos State University (LASU).

Coordinator of the Lagos State chapter, Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Yaqub Eleto, said the body has a responsibility to ensure welfare of all students.

“For many years now, UNILAG has been without a Students Union and LASU school fees is too high. This is a developing country and we should be encouraging students to go to school rather than hike their fees,” Eleto said, insisting that students would not give in for any kind of threat.

“ASUU strike is into its third month now, and we cannot keep watching things as they are,” the student leader said further.

“We are going ahead”, insisted the student.

JONATHAN’S 2015 AMBITION MAY BREAK NIGERIA - NEW PDP •He’s eligible to run - G13 ex-govs •No intimidation can stop G7 govs - Lamido

Baraje-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration that he is entitled to two terms in office, warning that his ambition can break up the country.
This came as reports from the United States indicated that loyalists of President Jonathan were using the occassion of the United Nation’s General Assembly to brainstorm on crisis rocking the party and the growing opposition to the president on his 2015 ambition.
In a statement which confirmed 2015 as a reason behind PDP crisis, the Baraje faction said Jonathan would be breaching the constitution if he contested and won the 2015 election, while also setting in motion a chain of negative events in the country.
The statement, signed by its publicity secretary, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, condemned what it called desperation on the part of the president in his alleged pursuit of second term ambition, adding that “we are worried that the president is intent on running despite his earlier promise not to do so and in spite of the wise counsel of well-meaning Nigerians, including respected elder statesmen.
“What else is he looking for that is making him desperate to participate in the 2015 presidential election, despite warnings that doing so may spark a chain of events capable of culminating in the country’s disintegration, thereby bringing to pass the predictions of Lord Lugard that Nigeria as a nation by 2014 may be history, later confirmed by the US think-tank that Nigeria may disintegrate by 2015.”
The faction tasked the president to “heed the advice of well-meaning personalities such as Professor Ben Nwabueze and Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, all of whom have advised him to correctly read the handwriting on the wall and stay away from the 2015 presidential race.”
While admitting that the president had not declared his intention to run, the faction questioned the statement credited to the president while addressing Nigerian professionals in the United States, affirming that it ran contrary to his earlier promise not to re-contest in 2015 while interacting with Nigerians and diplomats working in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Union (AU) in Ankara, Turkey.
The faction quoted the president as declaring on February 2011 that “he would have loved that Nigerians in the diaspora vote this year (2011) but to be frank with you, that is going to be difficult now. Currently, the law does not allow the voting outside Nigeria and so this year, Nigerians in diaspora will not vote but I will work towards it by 2015, though I will not be running for election.”
The president was quoted further to have asserted that “four years is enough for anyone in power to make significant improvement and if I can’t improve on power within this period, it then means I cannot do anything even if I am there for the next four years.”
Declaring that the presidency could not deny those statements, the Baraje-led faction said the president’s statement was “a historical fact, which Jonathan himself cannot deny now since he had two years to deny that statement but never did so.”
Aside its warning of the country’s looming break up, the faction also said “by 2015, President Jonathan would have served for six years,” adding that “running in 2015 will mean spending a total of 10 years in office and being sworn in for three terms as president, contrary to the provisions of the constitution.”
It appealed to Jonathan to abandon the 2015 move and save the nation from catastrophe, while advising him not to overstretch his luck.
He’s eligible to run —G13 ex-govs
Former governors and governorship candidates of PDP have declared support for the re-election of President Jonathan, saying  it would be against natural justice to deny him a right to seek re-election in 2015.
The former party henchmen, under the aegis of G13 candidates/former PDP Governors Forum, also said the drawbacks of past governments could not be blamed on the Jonathan-led administration.
According to the convener of the forum and former governorship candidate of PDP in Edo State, Major-General Charles Airhiavbere, PDP members were urged to embrace peace and return to the mainstream of the party, under the leadership of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
While underscoring their support for Jonathan in 2015, he said “the achievements recorded within the space of two years in office is highly commendable and the need to effortlessly support the president to continue the good work through national consensus becomes imperative.”

Political meetings in US
Loyalists of the president were said to have expressed relief at the speech of President Jonathan, especially his open declaration that he is entitled to run for a second term in office, in line with the provisions of the constitution.
A top placed source, who attended several nocturnal meetings in the US, said loyalists of the president deliberated on how best to tame political uprising at home and market the president when he finally declared to run in 2015.
According to the source, the meetings were looking at a worst case scenario by which members of the Baraje-led faction would finally quit the mainstream PDP.
Nigerian Tribune was told that leaders of Goodluck Support Group, led by Ahmed Gulak, were in the US with key officers of PDP, including its chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and others.
